People are always trying to lose weight or live healthier lives by trying to remove anything that is unhealthy. They take away chips, sodas, cookies, and basically anything that tastes good! But what if I told you that most people are actually forgetting to remove one item from their diet that is worse than soda! Yep, that’s right, there is actually something that is worse than soda and this item is fruit drinks! It is hard to believe but fruit drinks are the most sugary drinks on the market!

Fruit Drink Chart

I personally would not have believed it if I wouldn’t have seen it myself. Honestly, grab your nearest fruit drink and compare it with a soda. Fruit drinks actually have more sugar and more calories than the average soda beverage! And I know you’re probably thinking, but it says “made with real fruit juice.” Well, the FDA says that a beverage company can claim their drink is made from real fruit juice as long as it has some fruit juice! That could mean anything! A beverage company could add a dash of fruit juice and claim that it is made from real fruit juice, so don’t be misled by cheap marketing techniques.

Anyways, do not be fooled by fruit beverages people. I know that we all these drinks are healthy for us. But honestly they are nothing but liquid sugar that could lead to diabetes or obesity! So go to your local market and buy some fresh fruit so you can make your own homemade juice. Not only is it healthier, but it contains natural sugars that will not hurt you in the long run.

Now it’s your turn readers, how many glasses of fruit drinks do you consume per day? Leave your comments below! :)

There have been a lot of theories of how a country can beat the obesity problem that the world is facing. But I most recently heard a theory that I liked but at the same time I didn’t. A research facility in England believes that they found the cure to obesity…….a fat tax! Yeah you heard me, a fat tax! These researchers believe that if a country implements a tax on fatty foods and on sugar-sweetened drinks that people will buy less, therefore causing the obesity rate to decrease! Personally, I believe that this theory has its positive and its negative sides.

Percentage of Obesity Throughout Countries

For instance, due to the increase in price of fatty foods people will no longer have the, “oh it’s too expensive” excuse.  I mean honestly, how many times have you said, “hmm that piece of chicken is expensive, I think I rather buy a dollar hamburger!” I know I’ve said this millions of times, but I’m a college student so cut me a little slack. Anyways, now the tax will make junk food and healthy food prices basically even, so NO MORE EXCUSES!

On the other hand, the reason that I don’t like this fat food tax theory is because I don’t know the people that are going to rate my food. I mean there are so many foods out there that have their ups and downs! Take beef jerky as an example, it’s considered a healthy snack because it’s low on fat and it has large amounts of protein, which is good. But what if beef jerky is categorized as bad because it contains large amounts of sodium, which means people are more likely to retain water, which makes them heavier. I personally do not like the idea of someone else charging me a higher price on my food because they have a different belief than I do.

So personally I believe that this theory and potential policy has a great incentive, I just believe that there will be many angry people if a country was to ever pass a fat tax. However, if government officials managed to fix a good amount of the problems that this theory has, I would be open to listening to it. But honestly people, I know that sometimes we get lazy and prefer to buy the 4 dollar fast food meal then going to the market and buying a packet of chicken breast for 10 dollars, we’re all guilty of this. Just think of it like this though, that packet of chicken breast you bought can probably feed you for three nights (if you’re single), so aren’t you actually saving more money in the end? Oh yeah, one last thing; the money you save on food now, you’ll probably spend on hospital bills later. So eat healthy please.

Now it’s your turn readers, what would you do if your government passed a fat tax? Leave your comments below! :)

Cycle of Obesity

I’m sure most of you have heard about the recent debates about whether High Fructose Corn Syrup is bad for people or not. Honestly, its everywhere I look! Whether I’m watching TV and a commercial comes on or I’m driving and I see a sign saying “High Fructose Corn Syrup is bad!” and then I see another sign saying “High Fructose Corn Syrup is natural!” I’m personally a little tired of the debate, so I decided to look into it myself!D-Fructose and D-Glucose Structural Formula

There was a recent experiment, led by Fernando Gomez-Pinilla, a professor of neurosurgery at the school of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles that came up with a very interesting result. He found in his research that High Fructose Corn Syrup does not only lead to diabetes, and obesity, but it can also slow the human brain, and impair memory and learning! His research also led to what can cause a person to have better memory and learning, and the answer is omega-3 fatty acids! Omega-3 fatty acids is mostly found in fish, raspberries, strawberries, broccoli, and other vegetables. So I guess the saying is write, you are what you eat!

Anyways, my goal was to inform you of a recent study that showed that high fructose corn syrup can actually affect people in a bad way. So now I believe it is my job to tell you how to avoid it!

  • Try avoiding fast food! Most fast food places use high fructose corn syrup because its easier to process!
  • Try to limit your intake of canned or bottled beverages! Most sweet drinks have large amounts of high fructose corn syrup!
  • Read Labels! Just because a food item says “organic” or “natural” does not mean that it does not carry high fructose corn syrup, because it is technically a natural grown item.

So now its your turn readers, now that you know that high fructose corn syrup can affect you, will you try to avoid it? Leave your comments below :)

Ice cream

Are you guilty from late-night snacking? I know I sure am! Everyone knows that eating late has its consequences. Research shows that snacking at night not only hurts your waistline, but can also affect your sleep. I’m not saying all snacks are bad before bed because there are some beneficial choices that can help get a good night’s rest. However, there are definitely some foods you want to stay away from prior to going to bed.

Pasta, it’s easy to make and even easier to enjoy. The warm noodles lathered in delicious marinara sauce, topped off with fresh parmesan cheese is irresistible to any late-night craving. Since pasta is basically a plate full of carbohydrates, eating it before bed will only turn those carbohydrates into fat. Not only does pasta have a bunch of carbs, there is also a high content of sugar from the cheese and tomato sauce. The combination of carbohydrates and sugar makes pasta a definite no-go for a late-night snack.

Another type of Italian food that we all know and love is pizza. From kids to adults, we all enjoy it. However, a single slice of pizza could ruin your whole night. Pizza is greasy and the tomato sauce is high in acidity, which can easily cause heartburn and a long night of tossing and turning. So the next time you think about eating a slice of pizza before bed, think again.

Everyone loves ice cream and for some reason it seems the most appealing before bedtime. The rich and creamy treat leaves us feeling satisfied, but the minute we climb into bed we’ll be regretting it fully. Ice cream is full of sugar and fat. The last thing you need before bed is getting on a sugar-high.

Lastly, some people may believe alcohol can help you sleep better; however, that rumor is not entirely true. Alcohol in way can help people sleep, but the alcohol hurts the body as it tries to restores itself. Sleeping is a time of restoration and drinking alcohol before bed will only prevent those things from happening and waking up feeling fully rejuvenated.

I know all these foods sound satisfying at the time, but avoiding such late-night snacks will benefit you in the long-run. Put down that pizza and pick up a healthier choice like fruit because a good night’s rest is very important. So the next time you’re at the grocery store, pick up some healthy snacks just in case that late-night hunger kicks in again.

What are some healthy snacks you like eating? Thank you for reading and make sure to leave your thoughts and comments!
