When I think about Coffee, my first impressions are bitter, excessive amounts of caffeine and calories, and also how it would stain my teeth. If I needed something to keep me awake for school in the mornings or staying up late to study, Coffee would be my last resort. I never gave it a chance because why would I drink this addictive drink that’s not even healthy for my body?

Last week I noticed that my parents were drinking coffee every other morning.   Immediately, with me being an “anti coffee drinker,” I started telling them that it wasn’t good for them and that they shouldn’t get addicted. Little did I know that coffee isn’t as bad as I think it is? After my parents suggested me to drink a cup of coffee every now and then for health cures, I decided to do the research myself.

A growing body of research shows that coffee drinkers are less likely to have type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and dementia, and have fewer cases of certain cancers, heart rhythm problems, and strokes. It is true that coffee contains caffeine however, it has a lot of other components too. Coffee contains a lot of antioxidants and fiber that play a role in coffee’s health benefits and cures.

For people worried about developing type 2 diabetes, it might not be a bad idea to drink coffee. Research shows that people who drink a lot of coffee has a substantially lower risk of type 2 diabetes than people who don’t drink coffee. It’s    likely that another component of coffee besides caffeine, produces this effect since it was observed in all coffee drinkers, whether they drank caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee.

prevent skin cancer. This is because Caffeine could be related to an inverse association between basal cell carcinoma risk and the consumption of coffee. Finally, Drinking coffee is the cure to decrease the risk of bladder, gastric, renal, breast cancer, and it may actually help provide some protection against liver cancer.(Mayo Clinic)

For many people, there’s nothing bad about enjoying a cup or two a day of coffee. Indeed, an excessive amount of caffeine in the coffee is not safe but as long as you keep it within a minimum, your body could be saved by these health benefits! I think I’m going to start drinking some coffee now and you should too! So next time you’re going grocery shopping, you should pick up some coffee and you could potentially prevent your body from some damage! :)
