As a child, fish was never a meal I looked forward to eating at dinner. My mother would often make fish every week and I dreaded it every time. However, the more I ate fish the more it grew on me. Recently I discovered consuming fish has a number of long-term benefits. Maybe my mother was onto something and she didn’t even know it.
Even though fish is good for our brain, not every type of fish consumed has long term beneficial neurological affect. Studies have shown that people who eat fish that is baked or broiled at least once a week can potentially protect their brains from Alzheimer’s disease and other brain related problems. However, fried fish does not contribute to the benefits that baked or broiled fish give to the brain.
The key to a healthy brain is actually measured according to the amount of gray matter in the brain. Other than factors like age, race, and obesity, researchers have found that people who eat baked or broiled fish on a weekly basis have a greater chance of having more gray matter in many parts of the brain, such as the hippocampus, the posterior cingulated, and the orbital frontal cortex. Consuming baked or broiled fish allows for strong neurons in the gray matters of the brain by making them larger and essential healthier. On top of that, researchers also discovered those who ate fish on a regular basis were about 5 times less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease or mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Eating fish also gives people a better working memory compared than others who do not eat fish regularly.
Turns out, fish has a lot more benefits than I thought! Thanks mom for turning me into a fish lover, my brain is eternally grateful. So the next time you’re at the grocery store, make sure to pick up some fish because the long term benefits are certainly undeniable
