Apple juice, the juice we all have known and loved has been found with higher-than-acceptable levels of arsenic. The shocking news concerned many apple juice consumers, including myself! However, many consumers probably do not know there is a big difference of what is organic arsenic and inorganic arsenic. Organic arsenic is basically harmless and will pass through the body without anything happening; whereas inorganic arsenic most likely comes from pesticides that can be more harmful and toxic to the body. Recent testing has been done and has found that 10 percent of apple and grape juices contain mostly the bad kind of arsenic, inorganic arsenic!
Arsenic found in apple juice is not the last of our problems. High levels of arsenic are not just found in apple juice but RICE as well.
As a child to an adult, rice is a part of almost every meal in my family. After finding out apple juice containing levels of arsenic higher than what FDA approves to be in bottled-water limit, you can only imagine how I felt after finding out arsenic was found in rice. Studies have shown that people who consume more rice found higher levels of arsenic in their urine than those who eat less rice. As a daily rice consumer, I can only help but feel a little worried.
One of the reasons why rice has such high levels of arsenic is because of the unique way rice takes in the pesticides (arsenic) from the soil. The second reason is that most rice is grown in the U.S. such as Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Texas where they usually grow cotton as well and the soil already contains arsenical pesticides. So naturally, the U.S. produces rice that belongs to the highest average levels of inorganic arsenic in the world that could cause skin, lung, and bladder cancer. Even unborn babies exposed to such chemicals can cause problems such as low birth weight, immune function problems, and possible lung cancer in the future.
The FDA would like to reassure that apple juice is still safe to drink but on the case of the safety of eating rice is still in the air. So for now, worry less by changing up your diet to organic and lowering your intake of pesticides. Organic arsenic is essentially harmless so it doesn’t hurt to try
